Charles Relly Beard developed his dictionary over many years, working with a range of correspondents in order to build up a picture of each object he documented. Like the Oxford English Dictionary, the Dictionary of the Scots Language and other scholarly historical dictionaries, he collected illustrative quotations for each item and listed these chronologically in each entry. Much of this material has yet to be fully explored and discussed.
